Immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of the Yokut people and the early settlers of the San Joaquin Valley with Kingsburg Historical Park’s new Yokut Life and Wagons West exhibit.
Yokut Life Exhibit
Step into the world of the Yokut, the indigenous people who once thrived in this region. The exhibit features a detailed replica of a Yokut home, complete with a running stream with a bear and realistic displays of drying deer meat and fish.
Marvel at the hanging deer and beaver hides, showcasing the traditional methods of preservation and craftsmanship.
Visitors of all ages can engage in hands-on activities, such as playing traditional Yokut children’s games, trying their hand at spear tossing, and grinding grain using authentic tools.
Sit inside a reed home and listen to fascinating stories about Yokut life, including the extinction of the California grizzly bear and its impact on the tribe.
Wagons West Exhibit
Journey forward in time to the era of westward expansion and discover why settlers were drawn to the San Joaquin Valley near the Kings River. Learn about their pioneering spirit and the challenges they faced as they began farming the fertile land and building the railroad to transport their crops. Explore the diverse ethnic groups that came together to make Kingsburg a unique historical tapestry. From the early settlers to the development of the railroad, understand the contributions of various communities in shaping the town’s rich heritage.
